Timberline Lodge: The Shining
Do you remember the psychological horror The Shining from 1980, directed by Stanley Kubrick? Jack Nicolson performed the psychopathic writer’s primary role, who stuck with his family as a watchman in the Overlook Hotel. Some scenes for the film were shot at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon in the picturesque setting of Mount Hood. We spent an exciting weekend in this fabulous historic place. In this article, we share impressions from staying in Timberline Lodge: The Shining movie location. This post is not only about the hotel review. We also give hints on how to spend time in a fantastic Mount Hood area.

Short History of the Timberline Lodge Oregon
Where is Timberline Lodge?
Timberline Lodge is a historic mountain lodge on Mount Hood’s south side in Clackamas County, Oregon. It’s about 60 miles (97 km) east of Portland.
Mount Hood is Oregon’s highest mountain at 5,960 feet (1,817 m). The hotel is located in the Mount Hood National Forest, which offers picturesque scenery.
Our Experiences
We are huge fans of The Shining, so we wanted to visit this hotel. My partner Chris and I stayed at this hotel for a weekend during one of our road trips through Oregon. All photos presented in this article are our own. We also want to emphasize that this is not a sponsored post.
We paid for our stay at Timberline Lodge with our own hard-earned money. So, we share our opinions and observations based on our experiences without external influences.
Moreover, during our trip to Colorado, we visited a second location related to the book and movie The Shining. We were excited to visit the famous Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, where some scenes of the film were shot.
When was Timberline Lodge built?
Timberline Lodge was built and furnished from 1936 to 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project during The Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Timberline Lodge in 1937. The Timberline Lodge in Oregon has been a U.S. National Historic Landmark since 1977.
The architecture of the building deserves attention. The Timberline Lodge fits perfectly into the raw mountain landscape both inside and outside. Moreover, the Lodge is hosting a ski resort called Timberline Lodge. It’s a perfect place for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, and climbing fans.
Architecture and interiors of Timberline Lodge
The resort is a four-story structure. The ground-level exterior walls are heavy boulders. Timber is used from the first floor up. Inside you will find amazing huge fireplaces. There are six fireplace openings—three on the ground floor, three on the first floor. They give warm and amazing light.
The interiors are wooden. Huge, heavy wooden tables and chairs fill the space. Oregon woods, including cedar, Douglas fir, hemlock, western juniper, and ponderosa pine, were used throughout the building.
There are lots of comfortable sofas and armchairs with warm light around the fireplace. So, you can sit by the fireplace and read The Shining by Stephen King. And don’t forget about The Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, an unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining.
Even if you know these novels and have seen the movie before, believe me, reading in the wooden interiors of Timberline Lodge will give you goosebumps.
What’s more, at the reception, you can get a famous ax used in The Shining movie by Jack Nicholson, and take photos as in a film set. We had lots of fun with it.

Timberline Lodge: The Shining
Timberline Lodge is a popular tourist attraction. One of the reasons is the fact that it is the place where The Shining was filmed. It is notable in the film for serving as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same title, and it is worth reading this thrilling book before watching the movie. It’s worth watching The Shining movie before visiting the Timberline Lodge. But if you don’t find the time, don’t worry.
A film is shown in the small cinema room in Timberline Lodge every evening. Moreover, in hotel rooms, there are DVDs with a movie. So you can watch it during your stay.
Timberline Lodge: The Shining movie location
Stanley Kubrick used exterior views of Timberline Lodge covered by snow in The Shining (1980), an action movie set at the fictional Overlook Hotel. The owners and staff were worried guests would be reluctant to stay in Room 217, where the action was played in a horror movie. So, the management requested the room number be changed to the fictional Room 237.
The film’s main character is Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), who moves with his family to a mountain hotel where he works as a winter watchman. The calm of the resort, which is abandoned during the off-season, enables him to concentrate on his literary work. However, the sinister atmosphere gradually pushes him into madness.
The main theme of The Shining is evil and the mystery of its genesis. At the same time, Kubrick asks questions about the condition of the family and society. The main stars in The Shining are Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. Excellent acting, great photos, and music permanently imprint the film in the memory.
In 2013, Stephen King wrote the novel Doctor Sleep, a sequel to King’s 1977 novel The Shining. In 2019, Doctor Sleep, an American supernatural horror film, was written and directed by Mike Flanagan. So, also watch the movie to see the amazing psychic abilities & story of the Torrance family.

thrilling and amazing post, can’t wait to read more of these! thumbs up! 🙂
Timberline Lodge looks so rustic and cozy. I love staying at mountain lodges, as I always find so much to do right on the premises. It sounds like this lodge doesn’t disappoint. Even though I’m not a skier, I love to visit the ski lodges in the winter to watch and warm up by the fire.
This place definitely looks eerie, but your photos of the lodge were beautiful. I loved all the enactment of yours, which you did with the axe. Trust me, it created the desired effect. Jokes apart, this place is worth visiting.
It looks so fab and so quirky. Definitely need to see if I can add this in my west states roadtrip plan.
I love your pictures, but I don’t know if I could stay there. I think it’d be a bit weird haha. I also didn’t know you COULD stay here.
Love ski lodge type places but don’t know if I could bring myself to stay there haha! I would love to visit Mt. Hood and the surrounding area though 🙂 Especially in the winter!
This looks so spooky, such a great place for people that love horror movies like the shining. I am too scared to personally ever visit here XD
I don’t do well with horror so I’ve never seen the shinning, but it looks like a nice place to stay – I’ve always wanted to go to mount hood!
Would visit the Timberline Lodge for its history, and the antique look to it. Would like to explore the interiors.
I am not familiar with the movie but that’s good to know. Made me more interested about the Timberline Lodge.
It’s cool that they placed the famous axe at the reception. It adds to the experience. Happy to know that there are a lot great hikes to choose from. Will consider this during our future trips.
The Timberline Lodge looks like a lovely place to stay! I would never picture it as a place where a horror film takes place, but I can see the resemblance. I love the fact that they have an axe like the one in the film. Last month I visited Bangor, Maine, which was the inspiration for many of King’s novels. I think a couple nights here would make ,,a great addition to that trip (if it wasn’t so far away!). I’m not a big horror movie film, but I think it would be awesome to spend a night in room 237!
OMG!! Just last week i was seeing a documentary about the Shining where they mentioned the hotel where the movie was actually filmed was in Oregon and not Colorado! And today I know where the hotel exactly is and how it looks thanks to you! 😀 If only I knew this when I had visited Mt Hood Ski area last time. Your pictures are so cool! I can only imagine how fun (and a tad bit unsettling) it would be to spend a night in room 237!
Very cool! I had no idea that you could stay at the hotel or that it was an actual place. I’d love to stay there and watch the film while there. The hiking sounds fabulous, too!
Wow, a fireplace with six openings! That must be really huge. Our son lives in Medford, Oregon so we know about the beautiful trails there. We often discussed about going on a trip to Mount Hood, but it didn’t happen yet. I’m glad I found out about this historic lodge. It seems quite a nice place to spend a few days.
Every time you have posed for a picture, it itself looks so scary ..hahaha . But good to know that it has six awesome ski area around it. I love skiing and also hiking. Would definitely like to visit a place which is so close to nature
Haven’t read The Shining yet, so can’t really relate. But Timberland Lodge looks so picturesque. Really enjoyed reading this, and getting acquainted with the Timberland Lodge. Not only that, what i loved was that there are tons of other activities to do as well, such as the different hikes.
Whoa! That’s a super cool place. I’d totally love to stay here. The architecture is interesting. The ground-floor’s exteriors made of boulders is cool. I always have a love for stone castles & wooden structures and this is a cool combo of the two. Your photos are super funny! Haha. I’d want to get that axe from the reception and click such pics too. I’d definitely make my itinerary with atleast a night’s stay in Mount Hood area in Oregon, so I can stay here.
Interesting to follow the whole novel through this stay. I am super intrigued by it now. I love the whole wood feel in the resort and in fact, makes it so comfortable and warm. Quite amusing to see how they changed that room number coz of that one horror scene. I enjoyed this mini story a lot.!
Fact check: the lodge is at 6,000 feet and the summit of Mount Hood is 11,245 feet. I’m from there. And I’ve been to the summit three times.
I might be a bit leery about visiting Timberline Lodge, afraid that images of The Shining would haunt me through my stay! But I am sure those views of Mt Hood would sooth me in no time. So many great hiking trails to keep us busy. Good recommend for a hiking guide to ensure we pick the hike that works for us.
My husband and I worked at Timberline when The Shining outdoor scenes were shot there (my husband was the GM). Jan Harland and Kubrick’s cameraman stayed in the hotel shooting snow scenes for a couple months. Many of our staff were involved in the effort. My husband flew to London as a consultant to Kubrick on hotel operation details. He is the last credit to appear on the film. Great fun experience for all. The interior is another hotel in Colorado.
