During our visits to Denali National Park, we spent some nights camping in a tent at a site inside the park. Before that experience, we journeyed to the area in our RV, choosing to stay at different campgrounds outside the park, specifically in Talkeetna and Healy. We also enjoyed accommodations in lodges near Denali, including some that were conveniently located near the park’s entrance in the area known as McKinley Park.

As a result, we have some helpful tips and recommendations for those visiting Denali National Park, including suggestions for places to stay inside and near the park entrance, including hotels, lodges, and campgrounds. • Secondly, although the park is open all year round, you can only fully experience its attractions during the summer, between May 20th and mid-September. It’s the best time to visit Denali, as the only road in Denali is open and the park buses run. • Thirdly, most accommodation facilities, restaurants, attractions, and other amenities in and around Denali National Park are open only between May and mid-September. Demand is very high, so booking accommodation far in advance is worth it, as prices increase rapidly.

• Finally, Denali is seriously off the beaten path. The prices can go wild. Therefore, we recommend shopping if you are going to Denali from Anchorage or Fairbanks. Everywhere outside of these cities, prices will be much higher. Especially if you plan to camp in Denali, stock up on camping food. Even if you decide to stay outside the park in the towns discussed below – the prices will be much higher, so it’s worth stocking up on snacks for hiking in Denali.

How Many Days Do You Need for Denali?

• From our experience (we’ve been to this park several times and still haven’t seen everything), we recommend at least 3 full days to explore Denali. McKinley Park, also known as Denali Park or Park Village, is a community located closest to the entrance to Denali National Park in Alaska. It’s only 7 miles south of the Park entrance. It’s the gateway to the park and serves as a hub for visitors exploring the stunning landscapes of Denali. Our Tip: Not all hotels in the Denali area offer a shuttle service. We recommend booking well in advance if you require this service, especially if you plan a trip during the high season between May 20th and mid-September.

Where to Stay Inside Denali National Park?

NPS Campgrounds

Inside the park, along Denali Park Road, you have six campgrounds managed by NPS. We prepared a detailed guide about camping in Denali because we spend a few nights at one of them (Igloo Creek Campground). Moreover, while hiking in Denali, we saw two other campgrounds: Wonder Lake at Mile 85 and Savage River Campground at Mile 15.

Our tip: book the campsite in advance as it is trendy and places are limited. Denali has special free Camper Buses to take you to the selected campsite with your luggage. You can book it once you have booked a campsite. Also, check out our packing list for camping in Alaska.

Backpacking in Denali

You can also backpack through the wilderness in Denali and sleep in a tent outside the NPS campgrounds. But you must be experienced, self-sufficient, and prepared to encounter wild animals (grizzly bears and wolves). And most of all, you must obtain a free backcountry permit and attend a backcountry orientation in the Denali Backcountry Information Center before the permit is issued.

Denali Wilderness Lodges

Several historic lodges in Denali National Park are deep amidst the silence and pure wilderness. Staying in them is contact with nature and the majesty of Denali. Due to the prices, we haven’t managed to spend a night there yet, but it’s on our wish list.

Denali Backcountry Lodge

Winter in Denali National Park presents a serene and magical landscape, but it also means that many facilities and accommodations close for the season. When traveling during winter, having a reliable vehicle is important since no buses or shuttles are available. Ensure your vehicle has a 4-wheel drive; don’t forget to bring chains for the wheels.

Winter weather in Denali can be unpredictable. Ensure you have proper clothing, equipment, and awareness of weather conditions.

During the winter, hotels, and lodges in McKinley Park are closed. To find accommodation, you must search nearby towns such as Healy, Cantwell, Fairbanks, and Talkeetna. Most shops and restaurants in the area are closed or have limited hours during winter. So, stock up on food, snacks, and beverages in Fairbanks or Anchorage before embarking on your Denali winter trip.

Where to Stay Inside Denali in Winter?

The Riley Creek Campground is usually open for free winter camping, but services are minimal. Access to vault toilets is available, but water, sewer, and electric hook-ups are unavailable. Campers must be fully self-sufficient.
