The Narrows Zion Hiking Guide will help you prepare for one of the best hikes in Zion National Park and one of Utah’s best hikes. Moreover, it is an essence of a slot canyon hikes. For miles, you are in the cold water of the Virgin River, surrounded by steep rock walls. The walls are...
I have heard of the Zion National Park and it is on my list of places to check out and hike when I eventually get back to stateside but I dont know the hiking trails. I would seriously consider giving the Narrows a good go, it looks amazing and I am loving the scenery. Hiking here may take a bit longer for me as I love to capture the landscape and the beauty of the area through my lens.
We arrived at Zion very early in the day. And took the shuttle all the way to the Riverwalk path as our first stop. We made it all the way to the Narrows. But were not really prepared to wade in the water. So it was great to read about the trek beyond where we made it. Good do know there are two hike options – one short and one longer. And to know that there are other ways to get there than just through the route we took by the Temple of Sinawava. But I certainly did not know that availability of permits for the other routes might be so hard to get. A great guide for people looking to hike the Narrows.
What an amazing hiking path! I have visited Zion National Park once a long time ago, but we didn’t really explore much by foot, so we missed a lot of these beautiful landscapes. The Narrows does look like one for experienced hikers though, given the strong currents and 16 mile length. Utterly stunning though!
This is such a wonderful hiking place! The landscape is quite unique and those rocks are beautiful. We probably cannot make the complete hiking in one go because we have a small kid. But we might be able to hike the short route.

I love the outdoors. I haven’t been to the Narrows before. So your article intrigued me. Next time when I visit Utah, I will consider this place and time. I am impressed with your professional outdoor photos; they make you want to visit. Great hike recommendations. I’d love to visit the Narrows for a day hike.
I read a lot about the Narrows, but I think this is the first time I read a complete information about it. It’s good to know that there’s a place for renting the gears. It explain pictures of my friend who went there a couple of years ago. They’re not hikers and I was thinking, wow, they spent a lot of money for just experiencing hiking in the water?? Haha… And thank you for sharing tips for taking pictures in the Narrow. It helps a lot for me and other people who want to do the Narrows.
Fall would be a great time to go! And it would never occur to me to get a permit – that is really interesting, but I guess it’s a great way to keep track of hikers to make sure that everyone comes out safely. I’d love to go hiking in Utah – it looks so lovely!
The pictures are stunning and they do give us a peek into some of the narrowest paths of the hike. 18 million years of river erosion around Wall Street sounds interesting. I would love to do this hike, slow and steady, in my way.
Thanks for the tip. Never heard of wet hiking like this. The nature is nice and the view as well but it’s kind of suffocating for me because of the huge steep rock walls. The adventurous type of person might hype a bit if they come across reading your blog. I might consider visiting here once i got the courage to face my fear…
I was scared to do this hike. My husband was disappointed. Thanks for showing me pictures of what I missed.
We were happy we made the visit to the beginning of the Narrows as our first stop when we visited Zion. There were no crowds and the light was good. But we did not go prepared to go any further up the Narrows even though the water level was pretty low in the autumn. I loved this chance to see the views that we missed. I am sure it would be awesome in the fall with fall colours.
Hiking the Narrows is absolutely in my things to do list. I’m glad you put options for hiking, and I think I will do the shortest one. Thank you for giving us photography guide in the Narrows, too. It will be helpful. Pinned this article for future reference as well.
Wow. You really covered any questions someone could have about making this hike. I never thought about a water hike before. Interesting.
Zion is one of my favorite parks, been there twice and still have not hiked the Narrows. The next visit has to be in the summers just for the Narrows. Love the photos!

I immensely liked the photos and the way you have suggested, we should click them. I would like to hike to Chamberlain’s Ranch, though for river hiking one needs a great pair of shoes. The rocks are slippery and if not handled properly, they can cause major injuries, even ankle support is needed for proper hikes. I liked your advice for capturing through wide-angle, else covering everything would be difficult.
