We have not visited any of the National Parks in the winter. And we missed Badlands on our last National Park tour. So that might be a great one to visit in the winter even if some parts might be closed. We would definitely plan for a day trip. I would love to see the animals with the snow in the background. And with less visitors, hopefully we would see more.
I would like to do a lot of things at Badlands National Park. Stay in a good campsite for sure. Go for long photography shoots. Watch the animals in their habitat and just wash the city out of my bones.
I completely agree with you! I actually love doing camping/hiking/national park trips in the Winter because there are less visitors, and something about the snow covering the green or red out West makes it extra beautiful. Although camping can be a bit uncomfortable, investing in proper warmth gear is always fun. Thanks for sharing!
The view looks perfectly beautiful! To spend a snow camping here would be awesome but I’m not sure if I would last overnight. I guess a day trip at Badlands National Park is already an amazing treat, and enjoy the sights of that wildlife.

Oh my God I didnt know that Thunderheart was filmed in this national park. I would love to visit Badlands National Park and see that wildlife. Wow, Badlands does really look like a fairy tale in winter. Thank you for these useful tips. I would love to hike one of those easy trails. Although I usually travel solo, I think I’d go with someone more experienced for this one as I have never hiked in winter before.
Happy to know that they are open all year round and it would nice to enjoy the surroundings with all the snow. Thank you for sharing this detailed guide. Appreciate the heads up that there is usually no phone coverage in the area.
The bison are incredible! We have a very small badlands here in Ontario, nothing like this one. I would love to visit to see what a “real” badland looks like.
This is amazing – and once again you prove how beautiful not so famous parts of the US as – at least not so famous in Europe. Here it’s not only the sceneries but also the wildlife – whereby I would wet my pants if I’d run into one of these big guys in the open field….
We went during summer. But I must admit that your photos show off a different kind of Badlands beauty during winter. And after the scenic loop? The Walls Drugstore!
