Mardi Gras (also known as Fat Tuesday) history reaches medieval Europe. It is the name of the events of the carnival celebration. It starts on or after Three Kings Day and progresses toward Ash Wednesday (Shrove Tuesday). The idea of Mardi Gras is to eat lavish last night before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. On March 2nd, 1699, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans. He named it “Pointe du Mardi Gras” when his men realized it was the eve of the festive holiday. The first celebration of Mardi Gras in America took place in Fort Louis (currently Mobile) in 1703.

Mardi Gras New Orleans Itinerary 2024 – How to Get Around the City?

If you are visiting just the city, renting a car doesn’t make sense. Taking a taxi or Uber from the airport to the New Orleans city center is better. And if you are staying downtown, almost everything is reachable by walking distance, so it’s best to stay in this area.

If you would like to reach more remote city areas like a city park or some cemeteries, it’s good to take a taxi, Uber, or even a tram or bus. In addition, there are many more tourists during Mardi Gras, some roads are closed to cars due to parades and accompanying events, and there are traffic jams. It is not worth renting a car to move around the New Orleans center. There are also great city tours available, but book them in advance, as it’s a high tourist season.

Where to stay in New Orleans with Motorhome?

If you are traveling to New Orleans as a part of your more extended road trip and using your RV for it, we would like to give you some hints about where to stay. It’s not easy to find a place for your RV in this historic city. If you have a smaller motorhome (up to 22ft), you can try parking in the lovely New Orleans Courtyard Hotel (it will fit a small motorhome or camper truck up to 22ft), and it’s not very expensive to park there.

If your motorhome is longer, probably the best option is to stay at the rather expensive French Quarter Rv Resort. Everything else is far from downtown.

If you don’t plan to sleep in your motorhome and want to park somewhere in the city, try French Quarter Parking Lot (GPS 29°57’38.2″N 90°04’18.3″W) – it’s not cheap but might be one of the limited options to park your RV.

Where to stay in New Orleans to Watch Mardi Gras from Balcony?

If you are heading to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you plan to see at least one parade. And from our experience, the best idea is to observe the parade from the balcony of your hotel. If you can’t find a hotel with a balcony, you can try to identify one with specially-prepared platforms in the front of the hotel. In such a case, access is limited to the people staying in the hotel only or keeping tickets. This is why we prepared some maps of the three selected parades and listed the best hotels to see Mardi Gras Parades from the balcony. Further on in the text, you will also find specific tips on where to enjoy the Mardi Gras parades if you don’t have access to the hotel balcony.

TRIP TIP: If you dream of watching Mardi Gras Parades from a balcony, hotel, or restaurant along the route, booking several months in advance is essential.

The advantage of observing the Mardi Gras Parades from the balcony is your safety, fewer crowds, and access to drinks and restrooms. The cons are less interaction with the celebrating people.

Mardi Gras New Orleans Itinerary 2024 – Is New Orleans Safe?

One thing to consider before selecting the place to stay in New Orleans is your safety. New Orleans is very often included on the lists of the world’s 50 most crime-filled cities. It, unfortunately, means NOLA is not among the cities considered entirely safe for tourists. However, there are no official warnings or travel advisories. Like with many cities in the world, it just depends on the area you are visiting or the security precautions you take to reduce the risk.

So is French Quarter New Orleans safe? As in most such places, you must be careful. It means you don’t walk alone too far from well-lit streets, don’t show your gear, and try not to leave area limits. Be careful with your documents, money, credit cards, and wallet. The French Quarter is considered somewhat safe, but neighborhoods have a higher crime rate.

Below we put the list of the city’s most dangerous parts. Try to avoid those New Orleans areas after dark to reduce the risk.

  • Michoud
  • Warrington Drive / Robert E. Lee Blvd
  • Cleveland Avenue / S. Johnson Street
  • St Bernard Street / Buchanan Avenue
  • Port Street / Urquhart Street
  • Saint Roch Avenue / N Galvez Street
  • Tchoupitoulas Street / Jackson Avenue

How expensive is Mardi Gras in New Orleans?

The answer to this question isn’t simple – it depends on your needs. And it depends on when you book your travel tickets, when you book your loading, how you like to dine, where you would like to stay, and what events are interesting to you and you would like to participate in them.

PRO TIP: The earlier you book your accommodation and flight, the better prices you will get. Prices go crazy at the beginning of the year, and getting a hotel room during Mardi Gras may not be possible.

Our estimated costs based on previous years:

  • Airfare from Europe – 1200-2000 USD

  1. We don’t have Mardi Gras in Europe, so I’d love to see the
real deal in New Orleans. This is an excellent itinerary that you’ve put together, and so detailed too! The French Quarter and the Garden District both sound like my kind of areas. And, these parades sound amazing! I’ll definitely use this in the future if I ever get to see Mardi Gras.

  2. We had such an amazing time when we went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  I can totally understand why it is one of your favourite cities in the U.S.  We were there when Mardi Gras was in early February and we could not believe how cold it was.  Definitely need to prepare for colder weather.  I totally agree with staying in the French Quarter.  We stayed just outside and spent far too much time getting in and out.  We were definitely surprised with how many different parades there were. But we did hit a lot.  Some good tips here for those planning a visit.  Thanks for taking me back.  Good to show people there is so much more to do after Mardi Gras!

  3. Everyday We can always learn something new in
other parts of the world. Thanks to your post, I learned about Mardi Gras and
Fat Tuesday. These parades/carnivals look full of ambiance. I appreciate that
you include and inform us about parts of the city considered as the most
dangerous such as Michoud, Warrington Drive, etc. I will do French Quarter,
Cemetery, and Voodoo Tour and Spooky Family Ghost Tour if I travel to New
    Orleans.

  4. I have never visited New Orleans. Mainly due to safety concers. But have always been attracted to this mysterious city. Mardi gras seems like a great time to visit it especially with the parades. Thanks for the tips on the hotels from where to see them.

  5. This is a great guide to Mardi Gras! I have never been to New Orleans, so I would take it as any regular day too, but visiting during Mardi Gras would make it extra special. I love the idea watching the parade from your hotel balcony. What could be more convenient than that? There also seem to be so many fun things to do. Definitely would want to try the Ghost Tour.

  6. New Orleans is such a great city! I have not attended Mardi Gras and didn’t realize there are different parade routes. Thank you for including the next few years schedule, so helpful

  7. This is a nice itinerary. We visited there in the summer time so didn’t have the chance toe experience the event. But we like the town very much because it has lot of European presence and mixed with the local culture.

  8. This post brought back some great memories.  We loved being in New Orleans for days and travelled around to see several different parades.  I had no idea before we visited how many different ones there were.  We were definitely not prepared for the weather. The year we went was an early Mardi Gras and we found it very chilly.  We would definitely pick a hotel in the downtown core next time.  We were happy we stayed for a couple extra days and enjoyed the city when it got much quieter.

  9. Always been entranced by New Orleans. Too bad I can’t get out of Thailand to travel but if I ever did, I’d use this guide to visit the city, especially for Mardi Gras!

  10. New Orleans looks like such a fun place to visit. I have been wanting to and was planning a trip, but that got messed up with COVID. Visiting during Mardi Gras would be awesome, but I think visiting any time would make for a great experience. The French Quarter, Cemetery, and Voodoo Tour would be a must. Thanks for providing some tips on safety, great to know information before visiting.

  11. Your guide is really complete. I haven’t been to Mardi Gras in NOLA, not even visited the city in other times. I guess it’s because of the impression I got that the city is not safe. But, you have wrote down the grey areas that visitors need to avoid. So, it changed my perception a bit.

  12. New Orleans sounds like a really cool place to explore! Never knew it was linked to voodoo tradition in anyway but that is intriguing and I’m always a fan of good food, its what pulls me to a city. Mardi Gras seems like a nice time to visit, to be able to experience everything that New Orleans can offer. I’d love to stay in the French Quarter. Or even better, rent a motorhome!

  13. I bet the Mardi Gras in New Orleans is an incredibly authentic and vibrant experience. I can’t believe it is on for so long! This is a fab guide on the best neighborhoods, where ta stay, best parades, and how to get around.

  14. I’d live to visit New Orleans one day but Mardi Gras might be a little too wild for me 😆

But a food or walking tour of the city would be awesome

  15. Me and my husband have been hoping to visit New Orleans during Mardis Gras for a while. I didn’t realise it was closely connected to Shrove Tuesday and european celebrations. In England we call shrove tuesday Pancake day and everyone eats far too many sweet pancakes or Crepes.

  16. What a good idea to create a post for the upcoming Mardi Gras festival. You are definitely well researched in this area, and this is such a descriptive itinerary. Thanks for sharing!

  17. New Orleans is also one of the favorite US cities. I love the culture, food, history, and unique beauty. I think visiting it at Mardi Gras would be too busy for me, but if I did I would insist on your idea of staying in a hotel with a balcony I could enjoy the festivities from.
